Ramón Frade de León (1875-1954), born in Cayey, Puerto Rico, was a painter and architect. Adopted at a young age, he lived in Valladolid, Spain, and in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. In the Dominican Republic he first studied at the Normal School [Escuela Normal], under the direction of Puerto Rican exile Eugenio María de Hostos, and then in the Municipal School of Drawing of Santo Domingo, where he studied European artistic movements. He worked as an engraver and caricaturist for the magazine El Lápiz. In 1892, he met the French diplomat and painter Adolphe Laglande, who became his friend, mentor, and teacher.

He traveled throughout the Caribbean, visiting Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico, until he finally settled in his hometown, Cayey, in 1907. He then toured Italy’s major artistic centers to study classical art. He returned to Puerto Rico in 1909 and completed a degree in architecture (1909–1913). Later, he also earned degrees in engineering and surveying, with which he earned a living. [. . .]
