Exhibition: “Entre ser y estar, prefiero quedarme”

63

El Kilómetro presents its first exhibition of the year, titled “Entre ser y estar, prefiero quedarme” [Between being (ser) and being (estar) I prefer to stay] with works by artists Michael Linares, Kivan Quiñones-Beltrán, and José Luis Vargas, which opened tonight (Thursday, January 25, at 5:30pm). The gallery is located at 802 Roberto H. Todd Avenue, San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Here are translated excerpts from the curatorial text by José Julio Rodríguez:

“A guide, some will say, a kind of sorcerer who puts us in contact with what we cannot perceive at first.”

In “Entre ser y estar, prefiero quedarme,” the artists reveal to us, through artistic manifestations, their introspective processes of what lies hidden. “This visual genealogy leads them to explore elements that seem distant, but which hold historical ties to the Caribbean.”

“We access the inner world of its creators. (…)All of this tied to a specific intention, (…) a fundamental factor in approaching mystery. The ritual of creation that inverts, plays, questions, re-signifies, and positions us before the reflection of our own enigma.”

 – José Julio Rodríguez, San Juan, Puerto Rico, January 2024
