An exhibition sponsored and curated by Antonio Martorell and his friends (at the artist’s alternative art space, El Taller Dos), may be translated literally as “May you see yourself among saints” or, more generally, as “May you walk among saints.” This collective exhibition opened on June 22 and will be on view through September 29, 2024. The exhibition space is located at 56 Morena Street (corner of Iglesias Street), Playa de Ponce, Ponce, Puerto Rico.
Here is a list of participating artists (in alphabetical order): Robin Alicea, Gloribel Delgado Esquilín, Humberto Figueroa, Emmanuel Gracia Matos, Howard Kilgore, Jaime López, Michael López, Jorge Martínez Picón, Antonio Martorell, Pablo Padrón Carmona, Milton Ramírez Malavé, Krystal Romero, Javier Santos, and Baruch Vergara.
Description (translated from @antonio.martorell and AntonioMartorell.com/EntreSantos): El Taller de la Playa de Ponce presents a summer exhibition in its annex: El Taller Dos. Entre santos te veas recognizes the season that marks the year’s meridian, vacation time for many, the beginning of hurricane season, and a time for games and fun on beaches and rivers.
Summer is a solstice season in balance with the Christmas season, with its festivities and cool temperatures. There are two key dates that open this summer season: the eve of San Juan Bautista with its nocturnal rites on the beaches on June 23 and those of Santiago Apóstol in Loíza starting on July 25.
The exhibition Entre santos te veas invites reflection in times of uncertainty between wars, electoral processes, and other issues that overwhelm our population. The exhibition is an alternative that the artists linked to the Taller de la Playa offer as an aesthetic option to a town that, since 2017, has suffered the deterioration of its infrastructure due to pandemics, storms, earthquakes, and the collapse of basic services by a government in economic and moral bankruptcy.
Both the festivities of San Juan Bautista and Santiago Apóstol have become massive celebrations in some municipalities of the Island. No single saint has had a mayor bearing among the people of Ponce. This is our opportunity to fill that void with this exhibition. Entre santos te veas is a reason to visit the Playa de Ponce sector and share the art of the artists from the southwestern region gathered at this event.
