Mangroves are having a moment.

With their thick, tangled branches and partially submerged roots, mangrove plants are a common sight in Southwest Florida and along subtropical coastlines around the world. They are also a potent symbol of ecological interconnectedness.

These sturdy plants provide essential habitat for hundreds of species, filter pollutants from the brackish waters where they thrive and help protect shorelines from rising waters as the climate warms. They even have their own special day, July 26, which has been designated as International Mangrove Day by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

“They also provide us with space for contemplation, for reflection, recreation and mental health,” said Dianne Brás-Feliciano, curator of a new multimedia art exhibition “Entangled in the Mangroves: Florida Landscape through Installation” at The Baker Museum in Naples. “Even though they don’t have to do anything for us, they do.”

Brás-Feliciano, who joined Baker’s staff in May 2023 as curator of modern art, has created a purpose-driven exhibition that recently opened and is wrapped around the idea of entanglement in nature. “The whole concept of the show is that we’re all intertwined. We’re all entangled,” she said. “So, you can’t say that you don’t care about the environment because you’re a part of it. If we destroy the ecosystems, we are destroying ourselves.”

The show features nine artists from across South Florida whose work is deeply embedded in our natural surroundings. Their paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, videos and sculptural installations celebrate the beauty of Everglades landscapes and creatures while expressing a profound concern about ecological threats the region faces.
