[Many thanks to Linda Rodríguez-Guglielmoni for bringing this item to our attention.] The traveling exhibition “Climates of Inequality” opened yesterday (September 5) and will be on view through November 8, 2024, at the UPRM General Library.

The University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez will host Climates of Inequality: Stories of Environmental Justice, an international traveling exhibition and story exchange project exploring the history and future of climate and environmental justice (www.climatesofinequality.org). The exhibition is hosted by the Oral History Lab at UPRM (OHL) and will be on view September 5th through November 8th, 2024, at the UPRM General Library.

In 2019, UPRM students enrolled in Department of English courses partnered with a Rutgers University-Newark-led coalition of 500 university students, scholars, and frontline communities from 22 cities to create this exhibition. The UPRM contribution to the exhibit includes student interviews on and writing about how communities responded to the aftermath of Hurricane María with a focus on potable water, food insecurity, homelessness and houselessness, and access to medical and mental health care.

Join us for the exhibit opening on September 5, which will be celebrated with coffee tasting on the library patio at 9am with coffee from Carajillo Coffee House, Yauco. Stay for a showcase of the OHL’s digital justice projects created with the mutual aid organizations Centro de Apoyo Mutuo Jíbaro en la Montaña (Adjuntas, Lares, Yauco), Centro de Apoyo Mutuo Jíbaro Lares Pueblo, Colectivo PerlArte in La Perla, and Fundación de Culebra. The showcase will begin at 10:30am in Sala A of the library.

We will host public events throughout September and October, as well as an accompanying exhibit of photographs by Andrés Octavio, Recolectoras del Cafetal: Protagonistas en la historia del café de Puerto Rico
