On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, the Museum of the Americas presents an intimate conversation with the artist, “REDUX: Un viaje de cinco décadas.”
Description: An intimate conversation where we’ll explore REDUX in depth: a journey through life, art, and memory spanning five decades of photography and creation. A five-decade journey told in the first person. A unique opportunity to hear from his voice the stories behind the images that shaped generations.
Héctor Méndez Caratini (MAPR): Photographer and video artist. He became interested in photography from an early age. In 1968, he began studying Liberal Arts at Boston University. In 1970, he transferred to the University of Puerto Rico, where he focused on literature, anthropology, sociology, and political science. He also formally studied photography at the institution’s School of Architecture; he graduated in 1972. In 1973, he went to New York to study photography at the Germain School of Photography. Upon his return to the island, he worked as an ophthalmologic photographer for the University of Puerto Rico (UPR). He earned a master’s degree from the Center for Advanced Studies of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, where he produced photographic essays. Since then, his work has been exhibited, disseminated, and awarded at countless events and publications. He has been a professor, curator, and director of the Puerto Rican Photography Council. His photographic work focuses on the theme of identity and cultural change in developing communities and societies, both in Puerto Rico and other countries, especially in Latin America, and utilizes both color and black and white photography.
