By Breaking Belize News Staff: The National Evangelical Association of Belize (NEAB) is calling for police action following a viral video showing a young boy engaged in highly sexualized dancing with adult women during Monday’s Orange Walk Carnival, saying the adults involved should be arrested.
In a strongly worded statement issued Tuesday, NEAB described the incident as an “abusive sexual situation involving a child” and noted that it is the second such Carnival controversy involving a young boy in three years.
The statement follows a BBN report Tuesday morning on footage from the September 21 Orange Walk Carnival Road March showing the boy dancing closely behind three different adult female revelers as they bent and danced provocatively in front of him. The woman who posted the original footage identified the child as her son.
NEAB also referenced Facebook’s removal of the video after the social media platform classified the content as involving child sexual exploitation. The organization went further, saying that if the child’s mother was responsible for recording and posting the footage, she should also face arrest.
“We call upon our Government and the Police to enforce our already existing laws,” NEAB stated, adding that officers assigned to Carnival events should be briefed beforehand and instructed to intervene when adults engage in sexualized behaviour with children.
The controversy closely mirrors a 2024 Belize City Carnival incident in which an adult woman was recorded dancing sexually with a young boy. Then-Commissioner of Police Chester Williams described that incident as “tantamount to an assault of a sexual nature upon that child,” stressing that the boy appearing to enjoy or laugh during the encounter did not mean he understood what was being done to him. Police subsequently announced an investigation, while Belize Carnival Association President Patrick Thompson condemned the behaviour.
NEAB’s statement also comes just over two weeks after the Belize Council of Churches called for clearer Carnival costume standards, greater modesty and particular safeguards where children are involved. Culture Minister Francis Fonseca later said he disagreed with aspects of the churches’ criticism while noting that Carnival and National Celebrations organizers regularly discuss ways to make the event safer and more appealing to the wider public.
NEAB is now demanding consequences over the Orange Walk incident, arguing that repeated controversies will continue unless authorities take enforcement action.
