By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Edward P. Yorke High School completed a remarkable transformation on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, lifting their first-ever CSSSA girls’ football championship after a tense 2–1 penalty shootout victory over Wesley College at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City. Just a year after missing the playoffs entirely, EP Yorke now stand as Central Region champions and the Belize District’s representatives for the upcoming National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) Championship.

The final was tight from the outset. Tournament top scorer LiAudra Graham put EP Yorke ahead in the 19th minute, but Wesley College responded early in the second half when Treniece Amaya equalized in the 22nd. The 1–1 score held through regulation and ten minutes of overtime, sending the championship to penalties.

The shootout swung sharply. Wesley goalkeeper Clayian Swazo saved EP Yorke’s first two attempts, but her team couldn’t capitalize. Wesley converted only one of their five kicks—Swazo scoring the opener—while EP Yorke buried two of their four, with Graham and Jeniyah Welch delivering under pressure. Best Goalkeeper awardee Amarqua Arnold shut down Wesley’s final four attempts, making the fifth kick unnecessary and sealing the historic win.

In Tuesday’s third‑place match, St. Catherine’s Academy secured a 1–0 victory over Gwen Lizarraga High School. Charika Humes fired the shot that produced the decisive play, a driven ball that goalkeeper Jayshell Estrada misdirected into her own net in the 13th minute. The referee officially recorded it as an own goal.

  • Belize Agriculture High School – Northern champions
  • Mt. Carmel High School – Western champions
  • Georgetown Technical High School Egrets – Southern champions and defending national champions

Last year’s national title was claimed by Georgetown Technical High School, who edged Sacred Heart College 1–0 in a tightly contested 2025 final. Tamisha Moore scored the decisive goal in the 36th minute at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen. Georgetown reached that final with a 4–0 win over Corozal Community College, while Sacred Heart advanced by defeating Pallotti High School 2–0.

EP Yorke now step onto the national stage for the first time as Central champions, preparing to test themselves against the reigning titleholders and the best of the other regions.
