The Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour, and Local Government reminds all employers of their legal obligation regarding employees’ voting rights.
All employers shall allow employees prescribed period for voting on Election Day, Wednesday, March 6th, 2024, in accordance with Section 147 of the Cities and Town Councils Regulations, during the prescribed voting period, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. No employer shall make any deductions from the pay or other remuneration of any such voter or impose upon or exact from him any penalty by reason of his absence during such period.
Employers who directly or indirectly refuse to provide reasonable voting time or interfere with it (through intimidation or undue influence) may face legal repercussions. On summary conviction, they could be liable to a fine of $500 or imprisonment for six months.
The ministry strongly encourages all employers to honor their civic duty by ensuring that employees can exercise their right to vote without any negative impact on their employment status.
