By Breaking Belize News Staff: Elvira Mulholland, 45, the Belizean businesswoman accused of attempting to murder her estranged husband, has been committed to stand trial at the October session of the High Court. This development comes following the conclusion of a preliminary inquiry (PI) in Court #3 on Tuesday.
Mulholland, who appeared with substitute attorney Ian Gray on behalf of Dickie Bradley, received mixed outcomes during the hearing. While Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Cheryl-Lynn Vidal informed the court that two charges—grievous harm and use of deadly means of harm—were being discontinued, the main charge of attempted murder will proceed to the High Court.
The DPP explained that the Crown is focusing on the more serious attempted murder charge, rendering the other two indictments redundant. At the same time, Mulholland will also face a robbery charge, which will be tried summarily in the lower court, with a trial date set for August 25, 2025. The DPP indicated that three witnesses are expected to testify in the robbery trial.
Despite the partial legal reprieve, the court ruled that Mulholland must answer to the attempted murder charge, citing sufficient evidence presented by the prosecution, which included over 14 witness statements and documentary exhibits. The paper committal was concluded in under 20 minutes.
Mulholland, when given an alibi warning, reserved her right to provide a list of witnesses in writing within one week, as she was not prepared to do so during the hearing.
Her $20,000 High Court bail, originally granted in February 2025, was reinstated with four sureties of $5,000 each. The court also heard that the prosecution may bring additional charges against her, with an update expected by the next hearing in August.
According to police reports, the alleged attempted murder occurred on October 25, 2024, around 3:00 p.m., near mile 11 on the Coastal Road. Elvira Mulholland reportedly chased her estranged husband, a 59-year-old Canadian national, forcing his white F-150 pickup truck off the road with her own vehicle. She then allegedly exited her truck, struggled with him, took possession of his Glock 9mm pistol, and fired at him, causing injuries.
Responding officers found the husband’s vehicle in a ditch with bloodstains and expended shells at the scene. Elvira was reportedly apprehended while fleeing on Coastal Plain Road.
Mulholland is now set for dual legal proceedings—one in the High Court for attempted murder, and the other in Magistrate’s Court for robbery, as the Crown continues to pursue justice in one of the most dramatic domestic violence cases in recent memory.
