By Breaking Belize News Staff: The preliminary inquiry (PI) for Ellis Meighan, also known as “Juice,” was postponed once again on Friday in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.
Meighan, who is facing charges of murder and attempted murder, appeared shortly after 10:00 a.m. in Court #1 before the Chief Magistrate. However, the court was unable to proceed with the inquiry because the case file and bundle of documents had not yet been transferred from the Independence Magistrate’s Court to Belize City.
The Chief Magistrate explained that because the matter was previously being handled in Independence, the necessary documents were not brought down in time for Friday’s hearing. As a result, the matter was adjourned to Wednesday, April 22, 2026, when the PI is now expected to begin in Court #1 of the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.
Meighan had previously been served with disclosure in the matter on February 23, 2026, consisting of 81 pages of documents and 22 original photographs.
The PI had originally been scheduled to begin on April 8, 2026, in the Independence Magistrate’s Court. However, the case is now under the carriage of the Chief Magistrate, prompting its transfer to Belize City.
Meighan is accused of the April 2024 murder of Roy Lee Burgess in Placencia, as well as the attempted murder of American national Maia James, who was reportedly shot in the head but survived.
Following his deportation from the United States on September 12, 2025, Meighan was immediately taken into custody by Belizean authorities, who formally charged him in connection with the murder and attempted murder case.
Although Meighan appeared unrepresented in court today, he had been represented at his last Belize City court appearance by attorney Abibi Moguel of Lynden & Associates Law Firm.
