By Breaking Belize News Staff: After more than a year on the run, notorious Belize City figure Ellis Gilbert Meighan, 33, was arraigned last Friday at the Magistrate’s Court under heavy police escort.
Meighan, recently extradited to Belize, faces four indictable charges: murder, attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm, and dangerous harm. The charges stem from the April 2024 shooting death of Roy Lee Burgess in Placencia, as well as the near-fatal shooting of American national Maia James, who survived a gunshot to the head.
Shortly before 9:00 a.m., GI3 police officers escorted Meighan into Court #6. He appeared unrepresented and was not required to enter a plea due to the seriousness of the charges. Bail was denied, and he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until November 6, 2025.
The arraignment unfolded under tight security. Officers halted traffic on Coney Drive as Meighan was transported back to prison, ensuring no disruptions from the crowd gathered outside. Moments before being rushed into the waiting police vehicle, Meighan exchanged words with his sister, affectionately calling her “Juice,” telling her, “Love you too,” and asking after their mother.
Police sources confirm that no identification parade has yet been conducted. Witness Maia James was flown into the country but returned abroad for protection. Authorities say she is expected to return to testify, though Meighan has so far refused to participate in any ID parade.
Meighan is the brother of the late Tyrone Meighan, who was recently gunned down in the Lake View area of Belize City.
