By Aaron Humes: Ella Waight, a long time union leader, has been elected as the new president of the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB).
Waight edged former president Marvin Mora by 37 votes to 25 at the union’s 58th annual general meeting held in San Ignacio Town, Cayo District over the weekend.
Waight takes over from Luis Martinez and will serve for two years.
The meeting featured Deputy Prime Minister and lead Government negotiator with the trade unions Cordel Hyde and a report from past president Martinez. It was held under the theme “𝐍𝐓𝐔𝐂𝐁: 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲.”
The NTUCB is an umbrella organization of Belize’s major trade unions: Belize Communications Workers’ Union (BCWU); Public Service Union of Belize (PSU); Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU); Belize Workers Union (BWU); Belize Energy Workers Union (BEWU); Christian Workers Union (CWU); The National Students’ Union of Belize (NSUB); University Of Belize Faculty and Staff Union (UBFSU); Association of Public Service Senior Managers (APSSM); Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority Workers Union (KHMH-AWU); Southern Workers Union (SWU); and Belize Water Services Workers Union (BWSWU).
