By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize Electricity Limited has begun applying a Cost of Power Adjustment to customer bills, effective August 2026.
The move follows the Public Utilities Commission’s Final Decision for the 2026/2027 Annual Review Proceeding, which established a Regulatory Sandbox to evaluate and apply the COPA mechanism month by month.
Under that framework, the PUC has approved an adjustment of 1.5 cents per kilowatt hour for August, and it applies to customers’ August bills.
BEL says the actual cost of power over the past six months exceeded the reference cost approved by the PUC by 4.3 cents per kilowatt hour. The Sandbox framework caps the monthly adjustment at 1.5 cents to insulate customers from sudden price shifts.
Future monthly adjustments may increase, decrease, result in a rebate, or remain at zero, depending on actual costs and regulator approval each month.
Customers on the Social Rate remain completely exempt from all COPA adjustments, and the adjustment is exempt from GST.
The approved monthly figure will appear as a separate line item on customers’ bills.
