By Zoila Palma:  Officers from the Elections and Boundaries Department have successfully completed a specialized training program delivered in partnership with Galen University, strengthening their capacity to manage electoral processes with accuracy, professionalism, and integrity.

The Ministry of Immigration says that the program commenced on October 5, 2024 and brought together Registering Officers and Assistant Registering Officers to take part in the University led training.

Despite a pause to accommodate the previous General Elections, the program resumed and concluded ahead of the Village Council Elections.

A total of 16 officers successfully completed all course requirements and received certification.

The training covered key areas central to the administration of elections and boundaries, including electoral law, voter registration systems, boundary management, dispute resolution, and election day operations.

Participants also engaged in modules focused on leadership, communication, time management, emotional intelligence, and conflict resolution, strengthening both technical and practical aspects of their roles.

Minister of Immigration, Governance and Labour Kareem Musa emphasized the importance of the program in strengthening democratic systems.

“The work carried out by the Elections and Boundaries Department supports the foundation of our democracy. Free, fair, and transparent elections ensure that every Belizean’s choice is taken into account. This training strengthens the ability of officers to carry out that responsibility with accuracy, discipline, and integrity,” said Minister Musa.

Minister of Public Service and Disaster Risk Management Henry Charles Usher, under whose Ministry the program was originally developed, highlighted the importance of investing in public officers.

“This program is a deliberate effort to strengthen the capacity of the public service. By equipping officers with the knowledge and skills required to manage electoral processes, we continue to strengthen our institutions and improve the delivery of services that are essential to the country,” said Minister Usher.

The program delivered necessary skills and knowledge to uphold the democratic process and maintain public trust in the democratic process, emphasizing instruction in Good Governance, Ethics and Transparency.

The Ministry noted that this collaboration with Galen University provided academic structure and practical relevance, ensuring that officers could apply their learning directly to real world electoral operations.

Provost of Galen Dr. Cynthia Eve Aird noted the importance of academic partnership in advancing civil responsibility.

“We proudly recognize the success of these Election and Boundaries Officers whose commitment to learning and professional growth has been exemplary. Galen University is proud to support national development through innovative learning in Ethics, Good Governance and Transparency.”

Chief Elections Officer Josephine Tamai noted that the completion of the program reflects the dedication of officers who balanced training with ongoing responsibilities across the country.
