By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Police are investigating a fatal accident in Santa Martha Village, Orange Walk District, that claimed the life of an elderly resident on Tuesday night.
The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on November 4, along the main road near the old Northern Highway. When officers arrived, they found the body of a man lying face down near the roadside, with visible head and arm injuries. The deceased was later identified as a 67-year-old laborer from Santa Martha Village.
About 20 feet away, police located a white dump truck involved in the incident. Investigations reveal that the truck’s driver, a 36-year-old Belizean from the same village, had earlier parked the vehicle and left it off the side of the road. When he later returned, started the engine, and moved forward slowly, he noticed his brother waving at him. He then stopped the truck and discovered he had accidentally run over the victim, who was reportedly lying near the road at the time.
Police documented the scene, and the body was transported to the Northern Regional Hospital morgue, where a doctor certified the death. The victim’s wife later identified the body.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, which has left the Santa Martha community shaken.
