By Aaron Humes: A 76-year-old man narrowly escaped a house fire in Belize City on Sunday afternoon. Kenneth Flores, who suffers from dementia, was alone in his zinc home on Rio Bravo Crescent when he lit a stove and forgot about it, causing a gas tank explosion.

Neighbors were alerted by the blast and quickly came to Flores’ aid, helping him out of the house. Fire services arrived promptly, controlling the spread of the fire and preventing further damage.

Flores sustained scorching injuries but was conscious and responsive when taken to Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Neighbors praised the quick response, saying it prevented a more severe outcome.
