Elderly man caught with crack sent to jail for six months due to unpaid fines

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 68-year-old man is serving a six month term in prison after being busted with crack cocaine and being able to settle outstanding fines owed to the court.

Richard Albert Garbutt appeared in court on Thursday and was read a single count of possession of a controlled drug, to wit, .38 grams of crack. He pleaded guilty to the charge. He was imposed a fine of $500 plus $5 cost of court, however, his luck changed when the court discovered he owed unpaid fines in the sum of $1,900.

Garbutt will spend six months in prison in lieu of paying the fine. He was caught by police with crack cocaine on Thursday on Southside Belize.
