By Horace Palacio: Police in the Belize District are investigating the death of a 79-year-old farmer who died after reportedly falling from a horse in Maypen Village.
Authorities were alerted to the incident at approximately 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 27, 2024. Upon arrival at the scene, police met with 70-year-old farmer Denton Moody of Sandhill Village, who led them to a pasture about 100 yards from the riverside. There, officers discovered the motionless body of a man lying face-up on the ground.
Initial investigations revealed that the deceased, identified as Ernest Williams Funez of Maypen, was riding behind Moody on a horse when he fell to the ground and became unresponsive. Moody immediately contacted police for assistance.
No signs of physical injury or foul play were observed during the preliminary examination of the body. A forensic officer photographed the scene, and the body was transported to Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH), where a doctor pronounced Funez dead at 5:21 p.m.
The body now lies at the KHMH morgue, awaiting a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. Police stated that the medical history of the deceased remains unknown.
Investigators have ruled out foul play, but the incident remains under review pending the results of the autopsy.
