Elderly couple charged for allegedly attacking police with plastic bottle as land dispute with doctor heats up

By Breaking Belize News Staff: An elderly Belize City couple—74-year-old Alejandro Alfaro and his 60-year-old wife, Maria—were arraigned in Court #3 on Monday afternoon on a string of criminal charges stemming from a long-running land dispute on Eve Street that escalated into a confrontation with police over the weekend.

Both husband and wife insist they are the true victims, alleging that police used unnecessary force and that workers acting on behalf of a well-known doctor trespassed onto their property and assaulted them before officers arrived. Maria further claims she was arrested while broadcasting a live video on Facebook.

Maria Alfaro, a caregiver by profession, was the first to be arraigned. She was read two criminal charges: one count of aggravated assault upon a police officer, allegedly by means of a transparent plastic bottle containing a greenish liquid, and one count of obstructing a police officer in the execution of his duties. She pleaded not guilty.

Her husband’s arraignment required the assistance of a Spanish translator, as he is partially deaf in his right ear. Alejandro was charged with four offences—three counts of aggravated assault upon police officers, including the same police officer, and one count of common assault upon another officer. He, too, pleaded not guilty.

With no objection from the prosecution, bail was granted. Maria was offered $1,500 plus one surety, and Alejandro was offered $2,000 plus one surety.

Outside the courtroom, the couple spoke emotionally about what they say is years of harassment tied to a disputed parcel of land adjacent to their home. According to Maria, her husband inherited the property from the late Victor Herrera, whom he cared for prior to Herrera’s death in 2015. She said Herrera’s second wife, Veronica Madrigal, who died in 2018, subsequently left the property to her husband.

However, a well-known doctor is now claiming a portion of the land, and tensions have flared repeatedly. Maria alleges that the doctor has sent workers to the site to clear the land, provoking multiple confrontations, including previous incidents in May 2025 involving other individuals claiming rights to the property.

The couple claims that on Saturday, during one such confrontation, they were assaulted by the doctor’s workers. Maria says she began livestreaming the incident on Facebook when police arrived and detained both her and her husband.

Their attorney is reportedly seeking an emergency injunction as the land matter continues through the courts.

The Alfaros maintain that they inherited the property legally through the estates of Victor and Emily Herrera and that repeated conflicts—and now criminal charges—stem from ongoing attempts by others to take the land.

The criminal cases against both husband and wife continue before the Magistrate’s Court.
