By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Southside Belize City man has been sentenced to two years in prison after police discovered a firearm with its serial number removed inside his home. His common-law wife, who was also charged, was freed after prosecutors withdrew the case against her.
Elbert Smith, 21, of Antelope Street Extension, pleaded guilty to keeping a firearm without a license and possession of a firearm with the serial number removed. He admitted ownership of a black High Point 9mm pistol with a magazine, found hidden in the attic of his home during a police search.
Smith was sentenced to two years for the unlicensed gun and one year for the defaced firearm, but the Magistrate ordered the sentences to run concurrently, meaning he will serve two years in total. In sentencing, Magistrate Mannon Dennison noted Smith’s guilty plea, remorse, and positive testimony from his mother, which led to a reduced sentence.
His 43-year-old common-law wife was also charged since she owns the house, but she was not present at the time of the search. With Smith taking full responsibility, the prosecution withdrew the charges against her, and she was released.
