By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In a momentous tribute during its 25th Anniversary Staff Appreciation and Recognition Day, the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) honoured eight employees who have served the institution since its inception in 2000. The 25-year honourees—Hernan Zetina, Antonio Tush, Wilber Vargas, Minerva Rosado, Felipe Ramclam, Gervacio Basto, Donovan Tzib, and Gumercindo Mai—were celebrated for their enduring commitment and foundational contributions to BAHA’s development.
Human Resources Director Yamili Vasquez, who was recognized for her 15 years of service, said some of the honourees have held one position throughout their tenure, while others have advanced through multiple roles, reflecting both specialization and growth within the institution.
- Minerva Rosado has served as Administrative Assistant.
- Antonio Tush and Wilber Vargas have held the position of Quarantine Inspector.
- Donovan Tzib progressed from Quarantine Inspector to Senior Quarantine Inspector.
- Gervacio Basto began as a Medfly Technician and now serves as Plant Health Officer.
- Felipe Ramclam transitioned from Medfly Technician to Food Safety Inspector.
- Gumercindo Mai has held several roles: Plant Health Officer, Surveillance Coordinator, Entomologist and Field Investigations, and currently Deputy Technical Director Plant Health.
- Hernan Zetina has moved through the ranks from Medfly Technician to Supervisor of Medfly, Medfly Coordinator, Deputy Technical Director Plant Health, and now Technical Director Quarantine.
These long-serving professionals have played key roles in shaping BAHA’s technical capacity, institutional culture, and national impact. From animal health and food safety to plant protection and trade facilitation, their work has helped BAHA become a trusted authority in agricultural health and biosecurity.
The recognition ceremony highlighted not only their individual achievements but also the collective strength of BAHA’s workforce. Staff members with 10 and 15 years of service were also honoured, reflecting the organization’s deep appreciation for continuity, excellence, and teamwork.
As BAHA looks ahead to future challenges in food security, environmental protection, and international collaboration, the contributions of these 25-year honourees serve as enduring proof of the impact of dedication and institutional continuity.
