By Aaron Humes: The United Democratic Party (UDP) continued its electoral process this weekend, as former senior police officer Edward Broaster has been officially elected as the caretaker for the Belize Rural Central constituency. The announcement was made following the party’s Special Convention held today, Sunday, September 28, the Guardian Newspaper reported.
During the convention, 1,122 ballots were cast, with Broaster receiving 822 votes, surpassing his opponent, Kerry Belisle, who secured 285 votes. A total of 15 ballots were rejected during the voting process.
“We are focused on healing, uniting, and rebuilding the UDP with a great sense of urgency,” Leader of the Opposition Tracy Taegar-Panton later wrote online. She quoted the party’s national hero, Philip Goldson, urging unity and proactive measures: “The time to save our country is before we lose it.”
As the party approaches its National UDP Leadership Convention scheduled for November 30, 2025, Taegar-Panton called upon all members to remain united and resilient against challenges. “We must not cower to bullies. We must stand shoulder to shoulder and join our hearts and hands,” she remarked.
Broaster joins Senator Gabriel Zetina, was endorsed on Saturday, the party’s birthday, as standard bearer for the party in Belize Rural South, in his native San Pedro Town.
