By Zoila Palma: Preliminary estimates from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) show that Belize’s economy expanded by 0.8% in the second quarter of 2025, with goods and services valued at $1.375 billion, up from $1.365 billion in the same period last year.
Growth was primarily driven by the country’s goods-producing sectors, while the services sector experienced a slight contraction.
The primary and secondary industries recorded notable gains during the April–June period.
The primary sector grew 10.9% to $126.1 million, fueled by a rebound in major agricultural commodities.
Banana production increased 20.4% to 28.5 thousand metric tons, recovering from two years of low output due to disease and adverse weather.
Sugarcane deliveries rose nearly 20% to 881.7 thousand metric tons, reflecting delayed harvests from the first quarter. Early signs of recovery were also observed in the citrus industry.
However, the services sector saw a decline, led by reductions in wholesale and retail trade and a drop in overnight tourist arrivals.
Taxes on products also fell 2.2%, from $174 million in Q2 2024 to $170.3 million in Q2 2025.
