By Horace Palacio: Tonight at midnight, while Belizeans are preparing to celebrate Easter, reality hits again.
Fuel prices are going up.
Premium gas jumping to $14.62 per gallon.
Regular rising to $13.82 per gallon.
Right when families are traveling. Right when businesses expect movement. Right when people are already spending.
This is not just bad timing.
This is a direct hit on Belizeans.
Because fuel is not just about driving.
Fuel affects everything.
When gas goes up
food prices go up
transportation costs go up
business expenses go up
the entire cost of living rises
We have seen this before. Every fuel increase creates a ripple across the economy. Taxi drivers raise fares. Delivery costs increase. Shop prices adjust. Farmers pay more to move goods.
And in the end, the consumer pays.
Always.
So the question Belizeans must ask is simple.
What is government doing about it?
Because while Belize cannot control global oil prices, it is not powerless.
We have seen in other countries and even discussed here before what can be done.
Government can temporarily reduce fuel taxes and duties.
Government can ease GST pressure on fuel.
Government can introduce targeted relief for transport operators and small businesses.
Government can create stabilization mechanisms to smooth sudden spikes.
These are real tools.
But too often, they are not used aggressively enough.
Instead, Belizeans are told to adjust. To cope. To absorb the pressure.
And that is exactly what is happening tonight.
Another increase. Another adjustment. Another squeeze on households and businesses.
At some point, this cannot be the only strategy.
Because Belizeans are already stretched.
Cost of living is high.
Wages are not rising at the same pace.
Businesses are operating on tight margins.
And yet, every global shock continues to land directly on the backs of the people.
This is why fuel policy matters.
Because if government is serious about helping Belizeans, the pump is the first place to act.
Lower fuel costs means lower pressure across the entire economy.
Higher fuel costs does the opposite.
And tonight, Belize is going in the wrong direction.
So while families celebrate Easter, travel, and try to enjoy the break, the reality is this.
The cost of living just went up again.
And unless stronger action is taken, Belizeans will keep paying the price.
