By Aaron Humes: A recent survey conducted by the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) has revealed alarming levels of Escherichia coli (E. coli) contamination in drinking water samples across the country. The Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 7 (MICS7) found widespread detection of E. coli, indicating fecal contamination that can cause serious health issues.

According to SIB statistician Wendy Benavides, the contamination was found in both rural and urban households, affecting tap water, purified water, and water from dispensers. The survey collected water samples from households and source water, incubating them for 24-36 hours to detect E. coli colonies.

The contamination could be due to poor water quality or unclean containers, emphasizing the need for proper hygiene practices. Benavides encourages the public to clean their containers regularly to prevent further contamination.

The presence of E. coli in drinking water poses significant public health risks, including diarrheal diseases, gastrointestinal infections, and serious complications for vulnerable individuals. SIB will release a full analytical report once all water quality data is processed; it is not clear whether the Ministry of Health and Wellness or Belize Water Services (BWS) has any comment.
