By Aaron Humes: Two young men are facing serious legal repercussions following their arraignment in the Magistrate’s Court after police discovered a loaded firearm in their possession during an anti-crime operation.
19-year-old Kaleem Williams and 18-year-old Tayshaun Duran, both from the Faber’s Road area of Southside Belize City, were found with a Taurus brand nine-millimeter pistol containing six live rounds of ammunition. The firearm was uncovered hidden near a gas tank in the yard of a residence on Rio Bravo Crescent.
According to Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith, the incident occurred on the night of January 9, around 10:30 p.m. Officers from the Gang Intelligence Investigation and Interdiction Unit were conducting a routine operation in the area when they observed suspicious behavior from the two young men on the veranda of a yellow bungalow at Rio Bravo Crescent.
One of the officers noticed a young man wearing a military-style boonie hat, who appeared to be attempting to conceal something. When approached by the officers, the men were informed of a search for illegal firearms. Although nothing incriminating was initially found on their persons, a thorough examination of the area led to the discovery of the pistol partially obscured by the gas tank.
Both men were placed under arrest as it was determined that they did not possess a gun license; they were charged with keeping an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
During their arraignment, the duo pleaded not guilty but were remanded to the Belize Central Prison until March 16.
