By Horace Palacio: In the early hours of the morning, authorities discovered the remains of a suspected drug plane in the remote Toledo District of southern Belize. The aircraft reportedly landed near Dolores Village, a location approximately 15 minutes from the Guatemalan border, an area long associated with illicit cross-border activities.

Acting on credible intelligence, police and Belize Defence Force (BDF) officers arrived at the scene around 3:00 a.m. They found the plane burned to its frame, apparently set ablaze by those involved in the operation to eliminate evidence.

The plane is believed to have touched down on a makeshift airstrip located in a secluded cattle pasture. The site’s isolation and proximity to the Guatemalan border suggest it was strategically selected by drug traffickers for its ease of access and potential for rapid escape.

Authorities have yet to confirm whether any drugs or contraband were recovered at the scene. The investigation is ongoing, highlighting the persistent challenges Belize faces as a key transit point for narcotics trafficking, given its geographical location.
