By Aaron Humes: 42-year-old Brian Ashton Burke of Belize City by way of Esperanza, Cayo District, is headed to the Drug Rehabilitation Program sponsored by the National Drug Abuse Control Council (NDACC) at the Belize Central Prison, Hattieville, for 90 days.
The former bartender pleaded guilty to possession of utensil for consumption of a controlled substance, to wit a two-and-a-half-inch glass pipe for crack cocaine, and committing a mischievous act by wrongly naming himself as Owen August to Police following a search on Pickstock Street.
Burke told Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola that he had only recently started to do drugs following the death of his sister, who he says was murdered, and that when he was detained on January 2, he said he caught an officer secretly videoing him in the cell block while he was sleeping. The real Owen August is his brother who is now dead as well.
But the convict readily admitted that he is now addicted. Nevertheless, he does not like what drugs have made him become, so he is ready to kick the habit for good.
The Chief Magistrate gave him that opportunity by entering into the Drug Rehabilitation Program as part of his prison term. Burke also had outstanding fines to the court of $350 but said he would have relatives pay his fine instead of serving it in prison.
