By Breaking Belize News Staff: An American national described as a teacher and soldier from Philadelphia was fined in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday after pleading guilty to two traffic offenses stemming from a collision within city limits.
Twenty-nine-year-old Rainy Kerkulah appeared unrepresented in Court #8, where he was charged with driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention and failing to conform to a traffic sign marked “Stop.” He wasted no time in entering guilty pleas to both offenses.
The charges arise from an incident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday, April 26, 2026, on Water Lane. According to police reports, a Belizean private taxi driver of the Kings Park area reported that around 3:25 a.m., he was driving his beige 2012 Chevrolet Equinox SUV when, moments later, while crossing the West Canal bridge, his vehicle collided with a gray 2026 Ford Everest rental driven by Kerkulah.
The taxi driver stated that Kerkulah was traveling at high speed from a north-to-south direction along West Canal and failed to stop at a clearly marked stop sign. Despite attempting to brake, the taxi driver said he was unable to avoid the collision, which resulted in his vehicle striking the rear left side of the Ford SUV.
The impact caused significant damage to the front of the taxi, including a dislodged bumper and a leaking radiator, while the Ford Everest sustained damage to its rear left side.
Police, who were reportedly in the vicinity, responded to the scene and later directed both drivers to Precinct 1 Police Station to make formal reports. The taxi driver indicated he intends to seek compensation for the damages.
In court, Kerkulah was fined $100 plus $5 cost of court for driving without due care and attention, and $500 plus $5 cost of court for failing to obey the stop sign. He was ordered to pay the fines forthwith due to his non-Belizean status.
Kerkulah paid the full amount before midday and was free to leave.
