By Jose Luis Cruz: Police have formally arrested and charged two persons in connection with the shooting death of Dr. Naun Ulices Bonilla, the Belmopan physician who was gunned down on Friday morning, May 29, 2026.
Charged jointly with the crime of murder are 26-year-old Hannah Rebekah Foreman, a laboratory scientist, and the business partner of Dr. Bonilla, and 37-year-old Edwin Albert Bethran Jr., an electrician.
Dr. Bonilla was killed in the Las Flores area of Belmopan while reportedly driving his five-year-old daughter to school. Public reports indicate that he was inside his white Toyota Highlander when another vehicle reportedly intercepted him and gunshots were fired in his direction. His daughter was in the back seat at the time but was not physically injured.
Following the murder, police said investigators were pursuing multiple leads, including whether the killing may have been targeted or connected to Dr. Bonilla’s personal or professional dealings. Police had also been reviewing surveillance footage and witness statements as part of the investigation.
The charges stem from allegations that Foreman, a business partner of Dr. Bonilla in two (2) business ventures in Belmopan, was accused by Dr. Bonilla of questionable management of funds, including diverting patients payments to personal accounts and tampering with official receipts. Attempts to amicably settle the business dispute failed and the case was reportedly before the courts. It is alleged that Foreman hired Bethran to carry out the murder and hence the reason for both individuals being charged.
The killing sent shockwaves through Belmopan and Belize’s medical community. Dr. Bonilla was described as a dedicated internist who served at the Belmopan Medical Imaging Center, Western Regional Hospital, and also provided medical services to the Valley of Peace community.
Foreman and Bethran are expected to be taken before the court to be arraigned on the joint murder charge. As with all accused persons, they are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
