DPP withdraws major charges against Shevaughn Gotoy in Marion Jones shooting that left 1 dead, 3 injured

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 30-year-old Belize City man who was accused in connection with the deadly January 2025 shooting at the Marion Jones Stadium has seen several major criminal charges withdrawn against him, following a directive from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Shevaughn Anthony Gotoy appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Mannon Dennison in Court #6 on Monday morning, where the prosecution confirmed that a DPP memorandum dated August 22, 2025, instructed the court to withdraw all indictable offenses and proceed summarily with two counts of grievous harm.

Gotoy had initially been charged with eight offenses, including two counts of attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm, dangerous harm, and wounding, arising from the chaotic January 31, 2025, shooting that left three men injured and 39-year-old Brandon Baptist dead.

According to police reports, the gunfire erupted around 9:15 p.m. during a school football game at the Marion Jones Complex. Baptist, along with John Grinage and Kameron Williams, sustained gunshot wounds. Baptist was pronounced dead on arrival at the KHMH by Dr. Montejo at 9:35 p.m.

Investigators later recovered video footage and statements that identified Gotoy as a shooter. He subsequently surrendered to police on February 2, 2025, accompanied by his attorney, Ronell Gonzalez, and turned over his licensed firearm. During questioning, Gotoy reportedly admitted to firing in self-defense after another man shot at him first.

Despite Baptist’s death, no charges were ever laid in relation to the fatality, and police have yet to charge anyone for his killing.

Gotoy’s next court appearance is set for January 12, 2026, when his trial for the two remaining grievous harm charges is scheduled to commence in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.

No reason was provided for the withdrawal of the initial charges.
