Double murder shocks Unitedville – did previous threats lead to killings?

By Aaron Humes: Two families in the Cayo District are reeling from a double murder that claimed the lives of 23-year-old Jermaine Jerrington “Jerry” Ingram, from Unitedville, Cayo District, and 20-year-old Miguela Vanegas of Belmopan over the weekend. The incident, which occurred Saturday evening near a popular swimming spot by the river, has left friends and family heartbroken and searching for answers.

According to Staff Officer ASP Stacy Smith, “Preliminary investigation suggests that the victims may have returned from swimming at a nearby creek when they were accosted. The area has been canvassed with a view to identify potential witnesses and to obtain video footage which we hope would be of assistance to the investigation,” Smith stated.

A clear motive has yet to be established, and no arrests have been made; however, relatives of Ingram contend that the double murder was not unexpected. They believe Ingram was the intended target and that threats had previously been made to him which were reported to police. However, ASP Smith told us today she has no report of any previous issue involving Ingram.

This is the third double murder reported in the past few months following killings on the Hummingbird Highway and in Belmopan; police say they have taken note.

Police investigations continue.
