By Aaron Humes: An elderly woman and her wheelchair-bound son have been murdered in Belize City. The victims, identified as 66-year-old Evadnie Jones and her son, 39-year-old Luke Jones, were found by police in their front yard on Cedar Street just before three this afternoon.
Residents reported hearing a barrage of gunfire between 7:00 and 7:30 PM on Friday, followed by a heavy police presence in the area.
Reports suggest that just hours before the incident, a close family member of the two deceased, with reported ties to a major City gang, engaged in provocative social media posts perceived as taunts directed at rival gangs. This context may be significant as investigators look into a potential motive behind the double murder.
The double death is the third of three shooting incidents that occurred in Belize City within a 24-hour timeframe, following an attack on Amandala Drive on Earl Anderson and an attack early Saturday on Jermaine “Horse” Garnett.
Police have not yet made any arrests, and the investigation is ongoing.
