By Aaron Humes: On Sunday evening, two men from Ladyville were shot dead in separate incidents, raising serious concerns about safety in the community. The victims were identified as Shakeem Ferguson, 26, and Elroy Bainton, 29.
At approximately 5:32 PM, Ladyville Police responded to reports of gunfire at Joe Lewis Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered the lifeless body of Ferguson lying on the ground, having suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The initial investigation revealed that Ferguson had just returned home from the store when he was ambushed by an assailant in an SUV that fired several shots in his direction. Witnesses reported seeing two SUVs fleeing the scene shortly after the incident. Ferguson was pronounced dead later in the evening at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH).
Just minutes later, around 5:45 PM, police received reports of another shooting on Yellowtail Street. Officers arrived at Jew Apartment Complex to find Elroy Bainton, who had been shot multiple times. Initial reports indicated that Bainton was standing outside when a masked individual approached and opened fire before Bainton managed to flee to nearby property, where he collapsed. He was rushed to KHMH but ultimately succumbed to his injuries upon arrival.
Both men had been socializing together prior to the incidents, leading police, as reported by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Hilberto Romero of the National Crime Investigation Branch, to suspect they were targeted. “We are seeking two suspects and a vehicle in regards to [Ferguson’s] murder…We have information that it is drug-related, and he was targeted as he was going to his house…he was at another address in Ladyville, and he was followed from there, and that is where he was targeted as he arrived at his house.”
Romero added of the murders, “Yes, we believe they are connected. These persons were together prior to the shootings at Yellow Tail Street. Shakeem left and he was followed, and then they came back for Bainton…it’s the same perpetrator with the vehicle.” He continued that “an internal issue” is suspected to be the root cause of the killings and said police would step up patrols and have sent additional officers and investigators as the village has seen five murders in less than a month, though not all related.
The bodies of both Shakeem Ferguson and Elroy Bainton have been transported to the KHMH morgue, where post-mortem examinations are pending. Police continue their investigation into these murders, urging anyone with information to come forward to assist.
