By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Dominican Republic claimed a powerful one-two finish in the Under 23 Women’s Road Race at the Caribbean Cycling Championships on Sunday, with Melsey Yamely Pérez Vega taking gold and Flor Espiritusanto securing silver. Cuba’s Llianis Mesa Silveira, who won the U23 Individual Time Trial on Saturday, rounded out the podium with a determined ride to bronze.
The championship road race, held on Sunday, October 12, as part of the Elite Road Race, started at 8:00 am in front of MIRAB Furniture Gallery on the Philip Goldson Highway in Belize City. Riders faced a challenging course that looped through Ladyville, the Philip Goldson International Airport Road and the John Smith Road, passing through Western Paradise at Mile 8 onto the George Price Highway before entering the Hattieville Boom Road. The circuit then reconnected with the Philip Goldson Highway, completing the loop at the Airport Junction. Women completed two laps of the 54-kilometer circuit, totaling 108 kilometers (67.1 miles), before returning to finish in front of MIRAB.
Pérez Vega and Espiritusanto asserted their dominance early in the U23 category and maintained it throughout the race, despite being dropped by the elite riders led by eventual overall winner Teniel Campbell of Trinidad and Tobago.
