By Breaking Belize News Staff: A recent episode of Cocomelon Lane, a spinoff of the popular kids show Cocomelon, has come under fire after featuring a scene with two gay dads encouraging their son while wearing a tutu and a tiara and telling him “Think about all the things you like to do; just be you.”

The show is aimed at babies and preschoolers and has sparked outrage among parents in the U.S. and around the world online. Upset parents and pundits claim it is a part of an agenda to groom and indoctrinate children into LGBT themes at a young and sensitive age.

The controversy has sparked an online hashtag to #CancelNetflix. Elon Musk, the owner of X and Space X also urged his 227 million followers on X to join the boycott. This isn’t the streaming giant’s first time putting LGBTQ content in children’s shows. Earlier this year, a Netflix Jr. cartoon for preschoolers drew backlash for teaching kids they can identify as “nonbinary” and use “they/them” pronouns.

“Cocomelon Lane” was the tenth-most-viewed program in the United States on Netflix between Dec. 11 and Dec. 17, its fifth week in the top 10, according to Netflix.

Newsmax reports that Netflix has lost more than $15 Billion in one week since calls for the boycott began.

Netflix has long been supportive of LGBTQ visibility in media and in children’s programming. A 2023 study of LGBTQ representation on television by advocacy organization GLAAD found Netflix had more LGBTQ characters than other streaming services, a finding it said was consistent with previous years. Some of these characters are on children’s programs, including the series “Dead End: Paranormal Park,” an animated series that follows a gay transgender character, and “Princess Power,” an animated series in which one character has two fathers. The GLAAD report said it is “more important than ever to have content made for kids and families that depict the LGBTQ community in a positive and empowering way” because of the onslaught of anti-LGBTQ legislation across the country, some of which impacts children’s education. Rebecca Sugar, creator of the animated show “Steven Universe,” told LGBTQ outlet Them shows that “imagined the world with no LGBTQIA+ people in it” can imply to LGBTQ youth that “a perfect world doesn’t include you in it.”
