By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Disney’s ‘The Honorable Shyne’, a documentary of the life of the United Democratic Party leader Moses ‘Shyne’ Barrow is now showing on Hulu.
‘The Honorable Shyne’ documentary recounts the life of the Grammy Award-winning rapper and his rise to electoral politics in Belize which has led him to the position of leader of the opposition United Democratic.
The documentary takes an in-depth look at Barrow’s life from rapper to inmate to politician rising to the top of his party.
The shooting incident inside a New York Club in 1999 that led to his incarceration for almost nine years, and which was a turning point in his life is featured in the documentary. It features interviews with his mother, his father, former Prime Minister of Belize Dean Barrow, his uncle Michael Finnegan, friends, and industry insiders.
“A rising star in the late 1990s, Shyne’s promising rap career was cut short after being charged in a high-profile New York nightclub shooting, along with rap impresario Sean “Puffy” Combs. Shyne was convicted in 2001 and sentenced to ten years in prison, while Combs was acquitted,” the Hulu promotion of the documentary says.
“His journey is one of redemption, resilience, and transformation. This documentary provides an intimate look at Shyne’s personal evolution as he navigates fame, incarceration and a return home to Belize, where he finds new purpose and strives to lead his country to a brighter future.”
