By Aaron Humes: One of Belize’s oldest educational institutions, the all-male St. John’s College (High School), is facing a hard look at the question of bullying on campus after a student sustained serious injuries.

SJC student Dominick Alvarado sustained a broken hip, per a social media post by family members. The school is conducting an internal investigation and issued a statement on Monday reading, “St. John’s College is aware of the Facebook post made on Dominick Alvarado. We are in communication with Dominick’s parent and this situation is being addressed. We wish Dominick a speedy recovery, and his Wildcat family awaits his return.” (The Wildcat is the school symbol).

Meanwhile, police said that the bullies could face criminal charges if serious injury was sustained, per Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero: “If injuries were inflicted on him, then an investigation will be carried out and those responsible will be charged. And the bullying part, then that will also be investigated.” He said Police had gotten an initial report and were now following up.

Following an instance of a student caught virally taking verbal harassment in Stann Creek in June in which police also intervened, Minister of Education Francis Fonseca repeated that there is zero tolerance for such behavior in school: “Of course the ministry’s position is that we have zero tolerance for bullying. We are working with the management, the principals, the teachers, to address this matter. We do not want the students in any of our educational institutions to experience any form of bullying. Schools must just be a safe space for students. So, we are absolutely looking at that issue very closely.”
