By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Dick Cheney, the hardline Republican and longtime power player in Washington who helped define U.S. foreign policy after 9/11, has died at 84. Cheney’s family said he passed away from complications of pneumonia and heart disease.
A master of behind-the-scenes power, Cheney rose from a Wyoming congressman to become Vice President under George W. Bush, where he wielded enormous influence over national security decisions. He became the architect of America’s global response to the September 11 terror attacks, pushing for military intervention in Afghanistan and Iraq, and defending the controversial use of enhanced interrogation techniques.
Cheney’s policies shaped a generation of U.S. diplomacy and military action, earning him both praise as a patriot and condemnation as a warmonger. Even after leaving office, Cheney refused to apologize for the Iraq invasion or its aftermath, insisting he acted on the “best intelligence available at the time.”
In later years, he became a rare voice of defiance within his party, denouncing Donald Trump as a threat to American democracy. His legacy, while complex, remains one of unmatched political power, unwavering conviction, and lasting controversy.
He is survived by his wife Lynne, daughters Liz and Mary, and seven grandchildren.
