By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): During last week’s meeting of the House of Representatives, the Government of Belize introduced legislation that could see the Development Finance Corporation, better known as DFC, operating under a new name.
Prime Minister John Briceño presented the Development Finance Corporation (Amendment) Bill 2026, which proposes renaming the institution as the Development Bank of Belize.
According to the Prime Minister, the proposed change is designed to better reflect the role DFC has evolved into over the years.
Briceño explained that while the institution has long operated under the name Development Finance Corporation, it has effectively been functioning as a development bank, providing critical financing for housing, education, small businesses, agriculture, renewable energy projects and other sectors that contribute to national development.
The Prime Minister stressed that the change would not transform the institution into a commercial bank but rather strengthen its identity as a development-focused financial institution dedicated to supporting Belize’s growth.
He also noted that the rebranding would bring Belize more in line with regional institutions such as the Development Bank of Jamaica and help modernize the organization’s image.
The bill has now entered the legislative process and will be debated further before becoming law.
If approved, the Development Bank of Belize would remain the country’s only development bank and continue offering specialized financing designed to support economic growth and national development.
