Derry Bennett arrested: Police say he tried to cover his tracks after bar shooting

By Aaron Humes: 24-year-old Derry Bennett, a laborer from Roaring Creek Village, Cayo District, has been arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder in connection with a shooting incident that occurred on November 17 in Punta Gorda Town.

Today, police said Bennett was initially detained in the early stages of the investigation under a false name and was charged with committing a mischievous act, but was released for lack of evidence. Subsequently, police gathered enough evidence leading to Bennett, and an all-points bulletin was issued. He was caught in Camalote, Cayo District, and handed over to Punta Gorda Police.

The incident took place in front of JR Bar on George Price Street, Punta Gorda Town, at around 11:30 p.m. Ashton Martin, 41, a fisherman, and Kelly Stephens, 25, an unemployed individual, sustained gunshot injuries and were transported to the Punta Gorda Community Hospital for treatment. Both victims are reportedly in stable condition.

As part of the investigation, police searched an unoccupied property on Queen Street, Punta Gorda, and recovered a nine-millimeter pistol, two magazines, including an extended magazine, 31 live rounds of ammunition and 300 parcels of crack cocaine weighing a total of 60 grams. Police had recovered 13 casings from the scene and the pistol has been transferred to Forensics to compare it and establish whether it was used in the shooting.

The believed motive is related to drugs.
