By Aaron Humes: The Department of Transport (DOT) has announced the reactivation of national enforcement operations aimed at combating the rising issue of improper motorcycle use on the country’s roadways. This initiative is a response to an increase in public complaints and observed violations under the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act.
Concerns from citizens across Belize include excessive noise from motorcycles, particularly in residential areas, as well as a troubling decline in the use of protective helmets and violations related to carrying excess passengers. The Department has noted a significant increase in these infractions, prompting urgent action.
In partnership with the Police Department and Municipal Traffic Departments, the DOT will conduct targeted enforcement operations across the nation. These operations will entail on-the-spot inspections to ensure compliance with legal standards regarding roadworthiness, noise control, and rider safety.
Motorcycles found to be in violation of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act risk being impounded, and those responsible will face sanctions as dictated by law.
“The Department is dedicated to restoring order and ensuring safety on our roads,” the Department statement said. “While motorcycles are a practical form of transportation, they must be operated safely, respectfully, and legally. We urge all motorcycle owners and operators to maintain their vehicles properly, ensure they are licensed, and adhere to traffic laws.”
The Department is also encouraging the public to report any unsafe practices either to the DOT, local police stations, or Municipal Traffic Authorities. Citizens can voice their concerns through the Ministry of Constitution & Religious Affairs, Indigenous Affairs and Transportation’s hotline at 613-3104.
