By Zoila Palma:  The Department of the Environment (DOE) shared progress on Component 3 of the Watershed Project, a collaborative effort led by the Coastal Zone Management Authority & Institute and the DOE.

The DOE says that this initiative focuses on improving water-quality monitoring in major watersheds to safeguard the ecological balance of the Belize Barrier Reef.

Today marks a major milestone as the department conducted specialized training on the DB600 automated water quality monitoring stations.

During the two-day session, technical staff are learning:

  1. How the DB600 works: Master the operation of these automated stations.
  2. Parameters it tests for: Ensuring we can accurately monitor Dissolved Oxygen (DO), nutrients (nitrate and phosphate), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and Chlorophyll levels.
  3. How to install them: Preparing for the physical installation of these stations at the Sittee River and Monkey River sites.

The DOE noted that these stations will provide continuous, high-resolution data that is vital for long-term trend analysis and reef resilience initiatives in Belize.
