Department of Environment hands over refrigeration tools and equipment to Stann Creek ITVET

By Zoila Palma: On February 4, 2025, the Department of the Environment (DOE) handed over refrigeration tools and equipment for the Refrigeration & AC Program to Stann Creek ITVET.

Gwendelyn Garcia, Manager of SC ITVET received the items.

The DOE noted that more than 20 essential tools were provided, ensuring that students gain the hands-on experience necessary to excel in this vital trade.

This initiative is part of the Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) Phase-out Management Plan (HPMP), implemented by the DOE with the invaluable support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

“The HPMP is a crucial element of Belize’s national strategy to eliminate ozone-depleting substances and transition towards more sustainable, energy-efficient alternatives.

Beyond the provision of equipment, this handover represents a strategic investment in skills development, capacity building, and the long-term sustainability of Belize’s refrigeration and air conditioning industry,” DOE noted.

The sector plays a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and through the Kigali Amendment and the Montreal Protocol, Belize reaffirms its commitment to phasing out harmful substances that contribute to global warming.

Amir Cass, RAC Program Instructor, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating: “Together, we are not only protecting the ozone layer but also empowering Belize’s workforce with the knowledge and skills to drive sustainable development.”

The Department of the Environment thanked all partners and stakeholders who made this initiative possible.
