By Aaron Humes: In the early hours of Friday, police responded to a distress call regarding a burglary at a residence on Complex Avenue. Upon arrival at approximately 3:30 A.M., officers discovered two female occupants suffering from serious injuries. Both were immediately transported to the hospital for urgent medical care; however, one of them, identified as 35-year-old Delecia Flowers, tragically succumbed to her injuries shortly thereafter. The second female occupant is currently listed in stable condition.
Neighbors reported rising tensions in the area in the lead-up to the incident. Witnesses stated that on Thursday evening, around 6 P.M., Delecia’s teenage children were involved in a heated altercation outside their home, which reportedly involved at least six other young men. Eyewitnesses claimed that threats were exchanged during the confrontation. Earlier in the day, the teen girl had reportedly been involved in another fight.
In light of this tragic event, authorities are actively exploring all possible motives. Staff Officer Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith shared, “Police have been speaking to persons in the area in the interest of identifying the person who is said to have committed this very heinous offense and the department certainly expresses its condolences to the family, and we have dispatched a investigative team into this matter, and we are ensuring that the necessary psychosocial help and all of the different social intervention resources are made available to this family.”
Police encourage anyone with information related to the incident to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation. Her murder now makes her the fifth woman to die violently in just the last 20 days. The spike in violence against women has sparked alarm from a number of organizations and the public, especially online.
