By Zoila Palma: Benque Viejo del Carmen will soon become the resting place of the late Sister Elizabeth Monsanto, S.A.C., whose remains will be interred at the “Del Carmen Plaza in Honour of the Pallottines.”
Sister Elizabeth, who passed away in the United States on October 8, 2025, at age 91, began her novitiate in Benque Viejo and went on to make lasting contributions to education and spiritual life in Belize.
A Requiem Mass will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on Saturday, November 8, at 10:30 a.m., after which her remains will be laid to rest beside the monument of Sister Dominica Senn, the first local superior in Belize.
Sister Elizabeth entered the Pallottine Order in 1957 at the age of 18 and served as principal of Mount Carmel Primary School, where she transformed education in Benque Viejo del Carmen.
Her leadership helped pave the way for local students to pursue secondary education in Belize City at a time when no high schools existed in the Cayo District. Over her 25 years of service in Belize, she also led St. Francis Xavier High in Corozal and later devoted 34 years to ministry and renewal work at the Pallottine Renewal Center in Florissant, Missouri.
The Pallottine Sisters first arrived in Benque Viejo on March 19, 1913, and Sister Elizabeth’s burial will mark the first time a Pallottine sister is laid to rest in the town where their mission began. Her family has requested that, in lieu of flowers or wreaths, donations be made to the Pallottine Centennial Memorial Project Committee through Heritage Bank (Benque Viejo Branch, account #7212658).
Funds will support the upkeep of the Del Carmen Plaza and ongoing community service projects that continue Sister Elizabeth’s legacy of faith, education, and service.
