By Rubén Morales Iglesias: After the initial kickoff by Minister Kevin Bernard, the 2025 New Horizon Kevin Bernard Football Mundialito burst into action on Sunday, June 15, 2025, at the Louisiana Football Field in Orange Walk. This is Bernard’s fourth year as the main sponsor of the New Horizon Mundialito. His first was in 2022, according to organizer Wilson ‘Chato’ Perez, president of the New Horizon Sporting Club.
In the opening match, defending champions Trinidad’s USA routed Black Wata’s Japan 7-0. Nyel Ramirez, Oscar Bustillos, Ervin Cardena), Carlos Mejia, and Kerth Guzman each found the back of the net, while Ishvar Guy netted two to round off the emphatic win.
The second match saw San Estevan’s Italy overpower Sandy Field’s Spain with a decisive 7-1 win. Spain’s lone goal came from Christian Mendez, but Italy responded in force. Roosevelt Rodney led the charge with four goals, while Eric Martinez struck twice and John Gideon added another to seal Italy’s dominance.
To close the day, Orange Walk Central’s Germany edged out Orange Walk Technical High School’s Netherlands in a 2-0 victory. Germany’s DiMauro Alvarado and Rian Baños scored the crucial goals, ensuring their team started the tournament on a strong note.
While seven teams are competing in this year’s Mundialito, San Jose Palmar’s Sweden sat out the opening weekend but is expected to join the action next weekend.
With a rich history of fierce competition and emerging talent, the Mundialito continues to be a breeding ground for future football stars.
