By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Fresh off their third straight CSSSA crown, Gwen Lizarraga High School now turn their attention to defending their national title at the 2026 National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) Boys Football Championship, set for Friday and Saturday at the Marion Jones Sports Complex.
Gwen Liz arrive with a complete squad — strong defensively, dangerous in transition, and anchored by the tournament’s top performers. Tyrone Linares Jr, the CSSSA MVP and Best Defender, leads the midfield and back line, while Tyler Gentle, the Topscorer, provides the finishing touch. In goal, Shane Vernon enters nationals in top form after stopping three penalties in the CSSSA final.
Their opponents bring quality and pedigree:
Orange Walk Technical High School (North)
Sacred Heart College (West)
Julian Cho Technical High School (South)
First Division and Premier League experience in the mix
As in the girls’ tournament, several student‑athletes across both boys’ and girls’ teams competing this weekend are already active in First Division football countrywide.
Gwen Liz enter as the defending national champions after last year’s 3–1 victory over Belize High School of Agriculture. With momentum from their CSSSA three‑peat, they begin the weekend as the team everyone else must overcome.
