Debate resumes today for 2024 national Budget

By Aaron Humes: The second reading of the  General Revenue and Appropriation Bill 2024-2025 resumes this morning, Wednesday, in Belmopan.

After another largely successful year economically save for inflation in goods and services, speeches over the next three days will feature Ministers outlining their achievements, thumping their chests on the likes of debt reduction and economic growth in tourism, agriculture, BPO’s etc.

Meanwhile, the Opposition will almost certainly be hammering the government on inflation, food prices, addressing crime and social issues.

The Government projects collected revenue of $1.51 million from taxes, royalties, licenses, revenue accrued by Government ministries and so on, and projected expenditure or spending of $1.604 million including more than $486 million on salaries or ‘personal emoluments’ as they are described.

The debate also follows what the Government treats as national endorsement of its record to date, the March 6 municipal elections results which returned eight of nine councils to their control.
